Honda Civic EP3 Car Detailing

Check out this video of a Honda Civic Type R being detailed at our workshop in Crewe, Cheshire. Whilst the video is from last year, it still shows the level of detail and various processes that go into our treatments.

For best resolution please view in 720p.

The Type R is a car that is very familiar with us here and as such we now know how to extract the very best from the paintwork. The relatively soft Honda paint also responds well to our Crystal Lacquer Coating which forms a crystaline barrier over the paintwork. The new coating is incredibly hard and therefore withstands swirl marks for much longer than the original uncoated paint. You can read more about the Crystal Lacquer Coating here.

What is paintwork correction?

When cars come into the Crystal Clear Detailing studio for various detailing treatments, great care is taken in all aspects, however, paintwork correction is the most time consuming.

Paintwork correction is the process of removing defects in the clear coat or top coat of the paintwork. Defects can range from scratches, swirl marks, marring, sanding marks and many more, they are the items which prevent obtaining flawless paint. See an expample of defects in the picture below:

Before paintwork correction begins, we always measure the paintwork with an ultrasonic PTG (paint thickness gauge). This determines if any body panels have been sprayed and how thick the paintwork is before using cutting polishes to remove a very fine layer of the lacquer and therefore to eradicate the paintwork defects. It is a commonly held belief that consumers can remove scratches with materials purchased at their local motor factors. In truth, these products contain heavy silicone fillers which actually fill the paintwork defects rather than rubbing them away.

So once the paintwork has been measured, its then time to select a pad and polish combination. At Crystal Clear, we have a vast selection of polishes and pads but ALWAYS start with the least abrasive to ensure that as little of the clear coat or top finish is removed to get the job done and remove the defects. Removing too much of the lacquer may result in lacquer failure in the future and using a polish which is too aggressive may result in further refine polishing afterwards with a finer product. The picture below shows the defects have been removed.

Paintwork correction is by no means the only step in car detailing to getting flawless paint, but it is probably the largest and one of the most time consuming. Have a look at some of the 50/50 shots below and see what a difference paintwork correction makes:

How to wash your car safely and avoid swirl marks and scratches

After what seems to be a lifetime, here is the latest post in our blog entitled, “how to wash your car safely and avoid swirl marks and scratches”. In this post I will go through how to maintain your car by simply washing it, and is beneficial if you have just had your car detailed, or would simply like to keep on top of it. While the next set of instructions I am about to give you may seem over the top please bear with it as after a couple of washes the “safe wash process” becomes second nature and can actually speed up the wash process. First of all, the equipment.

What do I need to wash my car safely?

1. 2 x buckets – Click here to buy
2. Car shampoo – Click here to buy
3. High quality lambswool wash mitt – Click here to buy
4. High quality microfibre drying towel – Click here to buy
5. Preferably a pressure washer or if not a hose with adjustable pressure

What is the process?

1. Rinse the car thoroughly with water (or snow foam if you have a snow foam lance) trying to remove as much loose dirt from the car as possible.
2. Ensure your buckets are free from dirt and fill one with fresh water and the other with your suds. Use the correct dilution of shampoo as specified by the manufacturer. Using too much shampoo may be too strong and can strip wax off the car prematurely, using too little shampoo may not provide enough lubricity and may not be strong enough to remove the dirt.
3. Rinse the car off again to make sure that it is wet.
4. Start washing the car from the roof down. Dip your wash mitt in the suds, washing small sections at a time and once the dirt has been transfered to the wash mitt, dip it into the fresh water. This ensures that the dirt from the car is transfered into the fresh water rather than back into the bucket filled with suds. Use light even pressure and wash in straight lines rather than in circles.
5. Throughout the wash process, monitor the condition of the fresh water. Heavily soiled cars may require the water to be changed more than once if it becomes black with dirt.
6. Once the car has been thoroughly washed, rinse with your hose or pressure washer.
7. Dry the car using the drying towel. Gently pat the car with the drying towel to avoid dragging any loose particles of dirt over the paintwork.
8. The safe wash process is complete!

Thanks for reading our blog post on the safe wash process. In further blog posts we aim to cover, cleaning of wheels, interior and fabric hood roofs.

Nissan GTR detailing

Last month was a real treat for us as we got to detail one of our favourite cars at the moment… the new Nissan GTR! The car detailing treatment applied to this car was the CC Ultimate Correction Detail.

There has been a lot of speculation about the paintwork on this car, as the paintwork is so soft, it becomes almost unmaintainable! Even a brand new microfibre cloth would put scratches in the paint!

For this car detailing treatment it was time to apply something which would add a lot more protection. The super water repellant protection systems from G|Techniq are scratch resistant and form a protective barrier over the top of paintwork.

The car detailing video of this car can be seen below:

Testimonial

Just a short note to thank you for the superb, expert work you have done on my car. I think it looks sensational, and when I parked it to stop for a pint last night I have never had so many people peering at it and making complimentary comments!
